From Melrose Gardens catalog for 1968: “Daydream with us for a moment of the fabled oriental lore that this name evokes in the romantic corners of our mind – of the tenebrous jungle vastness – the carven temples floating in esoteric mysteries of golden light – the secret faces of the populace filled with dark provocative eyes drifting through our vision. Now let us describe this iris, for this was the mood that enshrouded this flower when we first saw it, but we must get down to particulars: domed and fluted standards flaring, orbicular, ruffled falls – all of this you can see in the photo. The color of the standards is an opaque antique buff and deep inside the flower these petals are stained with deep orchid purple (like gazing into the mysterious depth of the temple – there we go again!) The falls are a pastel violet edged with olive tan leading up to solid olive gold hafts and a bronze tipped dark indigo beard. Branching is excellent; growth and increase abundant. There will be a few plants that we can let go this year, there are several on reservation, so HURRY, and please don’t be mad if we have to refund your money this time. We will do our best if you are prompt.”
