From Robert Wayman Iris Catalog 1938: “A most unusual dark colored iris. S – bright chalcedony yellow, blending to a rosy buff border. F- rich blackish-maroon. It looks black from certain angles and in certain lights. A rich dark unique colored blend that looks especially well under artificial light.”

From Quality IOris Gardens Catalog 1938 “A richly colored variegat a. S. brown shaded honey in center; F. long and
flaring, velvety red brown with a black flush . Should be planted with bright yellow else it gives a somber effect.HM., A. l.S., 1932. $3.00.”
