From Fairmount Iris Catalog 1946: ” This iris has been described as a glorified Sable. It comes from a long series of seedlings from Sable and is a dark velvety purple that has been praised by all lovers of deeply colored iris. Dark but very brilliant, this iris has good size, substance and texture. The stalks are tall and well branched.”
From Cooley’s Gardens catalog for 1948: “Lustrous, deepest, richest velvety purple almost black. The finest and most satisfying Iris of a long series of seedlings from the famous Sable. 38″ stems, well branched, with every good quality desired in an iris. Midseason and long lasting.”
