From Rene Cayeux’s catalog for 1939: “S. Havana colour tinted brown. F. velvety maroon colour, edged bronze. Orange beard. Special colour quite distinct. Height 3 feet.”

From Cooley’s 1940 catalog: “Brown, deep, rich and velvety, like the lustrous fur of an animal. This new French sort has been one of the surprises of the past two years. Standards are a decided brown tone, the falls exceedingly dark brown, edged to match the standards.”

From Schreiner’s Iris Lover’s catalog for 1947: “The brown iris and a velvety iris too so it is really the brown velvet iris. Amazing rich maroon brown enfolds the flower. Standards of light chocolate and falls a very rich, glossy red-maroon edged to match the standards. Rich and sleek without a vein. Not tall but noteworthy for its rich color, distinctive and charming.”
