From The Longfield iris Farms catalog for 1937: “English Silver Medal. Giant deep blue purple with long drooping falls rather heavily veined white.”

From Cooley’s Garden catalog for 1938: “A very long, egg-shaped deep purple, with heavy reticulation on the haft. Of great size and imposing appearance in the garden. An English Silver Medal Winner.”

From Robert Wayman’s catalog for 1940: “Huge flowers with erect pure mauve standards and straight hanging brilliant blue falls, with a pure white throat in striking contrast, prominently veined deep blue. The prominently veined white throat is one of the striking features of this Iris. It is really excellent.”

RHS Silver Medal 1932.

Note: Imposing despite its conspicuously short stature. The 1949 Check List has a cryptic entry for this iris: “Mussolini. Etc., delete R., 1932.” sdt
