From the Wanganui Iris catalog for 1965-66: “Raised from the mating of one of N.Z.’s most distinctive introductions, Polar Cap, with one of Paul Cook’s fabulous new amoenas, this iris exhibits the best features of each strain. We have the lovely serene form and character of Polar Cap combined with the indefinably smooth merging of colour from the lighter standards to the deeper falls of Paul Cook’s lovely amoenas. Old Melodies is not an amoena but a bicolour lavender which deepens at the midrib and haft to soften the contrast to the much deeper coloured rich lavender blue of the falls. The beard is pale and inconspicuous and does not disturb or distract from the colour harmony of the flower. Very free-flowering, tall and stately, the bloom spike carries many flowers well spaced on its splendid branching. A perfect show flower.”
