What’s in a Name? Shannopin’s Town, the 18th c. village of Chief Shannopin of the Delaware tribe, existed within what is now the riverfront of Pittsburgh; T. Lloyd Pillow had resided within a few miles of its setting when he introduced this iris. “The name Shannopin appears on one letter as a signature with the spelling Shawannopin, and is thought to be pronounced as ‘Shawnopin’.” Lawrenceville Historical Soc.;’The Search for Shannopinstown’ by Jim Wudarczyk; http://www.lhs15201.org/articles_b.asp?ID=14
