In 1927 AIS founding president John Wister dedicated his new iris book, “To the memory of Bertrand Farr, who more than any other man made the present popularity of the iris in America possible.” Dream Gardener explains how Farr made an almost overnight career transformation not only to achieve this historic pioneering role with irises, but also to make other major contributions to the worlds of peonies and daylilies.
This book covers Farr’s early life in Iowa on a farm, as a piano student in Boston and, later, in his new home in Wyomissing, PA, where he created his 265- acre nursery. Throughout the 158-page book are catalog plant lists and numerous period photographs, especially of Farr’s irises, including those from colored glass slides and period catalogs, as well as lyrical essays and whimsical poems that Farr wrote for his famous catalogs.
